چکیده

We derive the observed luminosity function of virialized systems. Coupling this statistic with the mass function predicted by CDM cosmogonies we obtain the functional behavior of the mass–to–light ratio over a wide dynamical range in mass. We conclude that the mass–to–light ratio has a minimum close to the luminosity of an L∗ galaxy halo. We also show how to derive in a self-consistent way the X-ray–to–optical luminosity ratio for galaxy systems. As a consequence, we predict a fundamental break in the auto-similar scaling behavior of fundamental correlations in going from the group to the cluster scales.

A Model for the Density Distribution of Virialized Cdm Halos

An analytic collapse model for the formation and density distribution of virialized cold dark matter halos is proposed. Hierarchical structure formation is taken into account explicitly. Monte Carlo methods are used to generate samples of mass histories of virialized halos. The mean density distribution found from the collapse model is in good agreement with numerical results in the mass range ...

The Mass–to–light Function of Virialized Systems and the Relationship between Their Optical and X-ray Properties

We compare the B-band luminosity function of virialized halos with the mass function predicted by the Press-Schechter theory in cold dark matter cosmogonies. We find that all cosmological models fail to match our results if a constant mass–to–light ratio is assumed. In order for these models to match the faint end of the luminosity function, a mass–to–light ratio decreasing with luminosity as L...

The Optical Luminosity Function of Virialized Systems

We determine the optical luminosity function of virialized systems over the full range of density enhancements, from single galaxies to clusters of galaxies. The analysis is based on galaxy systems identified from the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample, which is the largest, all-sky catalog of objectivelyidentified bound objects presently available. We find that the B-band luminosity function o...

The Central Mass and Phase-Space Densities of Dark Matter Halos: Cosmological Implications

Current data suggest that the central mass densities ρ0 and phase-space densities Q ≡ ρ0/σ 3 V of cosmological halos in the present universe are correlated with their velocity dispersions σV over a very wide range of σV from less than 10 to more than 1000 km s. Such correlations are an expected consequence of the statistical correlation of the formation epochs of virialized objects in the CDM m...

How universal are the density profiles of dark halos ?

We investigate the formation of virialized halos due to the gravitational collapse of collisionless matter using high-resolution N-body simulations. A variety of formation scenarios are studied, ranging from hierarchical clustering to monolithic radial collapse. The goal of these experiments was to study departures from the universal density profiles recently found to arise in cosmological sett...
